- DOOM-IT SETUP PROGRAM Version 2.1
- ---------------------------------
-
- SUMMARY: The purpose of this program is to make the task of setting up
- single or multiple player games easier. By running DOOM-IT,
- instead of the setup program that comes with DOOM, you can
- take advantage of many extended features not usually offered.
-
- For example, you can start a game (in single or multiplayer mode)
- from any level of any episode. As soon as you start DOOM your
- right there! You can also choose to play PWAD levels that you
- created yourself, or perhaps downloaded. You are taken through
- the whole process by easy to use pop-up menus. Some other
- features that DOOM-IT allows you to do are: record your game
- movements and play them back as a Demo, choose to play with
- no enemies, or have the enemies keep coming back to life. None
- of these things are offered in the original setup program.
-
- By using this program, setting up single player, network, serial,
- or modem games will be completely simplified and provide more
- options than before.
-
- ------------
- INSTRUCTIONS
- ------------
-
- INSTALLATION: To install DOOM-IT, unzip all the files within DOOMIT.ZIP
- into your DOOM directory. To start the program type DOOMIT.
- You must run the DOOMIT batch file for DOOM-IT to work
- correctly. You cannot run DMLOAD.EXE.
-
-
- PRE-CONFIGURATION:
-
- Before starting Network, Serial, or Modem games you need
- to set the PORT and COM settings. You can do this from
- the menu bar located at the top of the screen. To access
- this menu you need to press the ALT key. Then press the
- right or left arrow until the category CONFIG is selected.
- From here you can choose to setup any of the three types
- of connections. More info on each of these is given later
- on in this document.
-
- -----------
- USING PWADS
- -----------
- If you choose to use PWADS you will be presented with a menu
- containing all files with a .WAD extension in the current
- directory. All files except DOOM.WAD are probably PWADS. These
- files can contain new levels, graphics, sounds, etc.. You can
- select up to five different PWADS to load with DOOM. To do this
- you must highlight the desired file then press the space bar to
- mark it. If you do this correctly you will see a "*" next to the
- file name. Once you have your PWADS marked you can press the
- enter key to continue.
-
- If you chose to load a PWAD containing a new level the program
- will ask you if you want to warp directly to that level. Doing
- this will skip the process of choosing an episode and level. If
- you have marked more than one PWAD level to load, the program will
- warp you to the lowest one.
-
- ---------------
- SPECIAL OPTIONS
- ---------------
- When you get to the special options menu you have a choice of
- "No Enemies" or "Re-Spawning". If you choose to have no enemies
- then enemies will not be present on any of the levels. This could
- be useful in multi-player games when enemies just get in the way.
- If you choose to have re-spawning, then once you kill an enemy,
- it will come back to life after about 30 seconds. This is the
- same technique used when you select NIGHTMARE for you level of
- difficulty.
-
- --------------
- RECORDING GAME
- --------------
- If you choose to Record your game you must give the program a file
- name to save the data into. When giving it a file name use no more
- than eight characters and leave off the file extension. You MUST
- do this because DOOM will put one on for you. DOOM will use .LMP as
- the file extension of your recorded game. So, if you give DOOM-IT
- the name "DEMO1" for recording, DOOM will save it as "DEMO1.LMP".
- Recording of your game begins right when you start DOOM. To end
- the recording you need to press "Q", or exit the level. Once you
- have recorded your demo, you can it play it back within DOOM-IT
- by selecting "PLAY DEMO" under MISC on the menu bar.
-
- NOTE: If you record a demo from a pwad you must load that same
- pwad along with DOOM for your demo to play correctly.
-
- -------------
- NETWORK PORTS
- -------------
- When playing a network game you must select a port number. By
- selecting different port numbers you can play more than one match
- over the same network. The default port number is 0. If you don't
- want to change this then just press the return key to continue.
-
- ------------
- SERIAL SETUP
- ------------
- If you play DOOM over a serial cable you must pick the COM port
- that you serial cable is plugged into. This will either be COM 1
- or COM 2. COM ports higher than this are extended COM ports. They
- are usually only useable by devices like an internal modem.
-
- --------------
- MODEM COM PORT
- --------------
- When setting up a modem game you must choose the COM port
- that your modem is plugged into. External modems can only
- use COM 1 or COM 2. Most internal modems can be setup to
- use COM ports 1 through 4.
-
- -----------
- MODEM SETUP
- -----------
- When you get to the "Modem Setup" window you must choose
- between making your computer the one that dials or the one
- that answers. If you choose to dial, then you will be required
- to type in the destination phone number or use the phone book.
- If you choose to answer, then you need only to wait for the
- incoming call. If you already have the two computers connected
- by another program, then choose "Already Connected".
-
- Before starting a Modem game make sure you modem is setup
- correctly in MODEM.CFG
-
- ----------
- PHONE BOOK
- ----------
- To setup the phone book you need to access the menu bar by pressing
- the ALT key. Then press the right or left arrow until the category
- "PBook" is selected. You can then choose to edit the phone book.
- After you have choosen EDIT, you are able to pick one of ten
- slots to enter a persons name and phone number into. Select a
- slot and press the ENTER key. Type the persons name and press
- ENTER again. Now type their phone number and press ENTER a final
- time. You are now back at the beggining. To exit the menu bar press
- the ESC key.
